Understand the Non-Life Premium Volume

Overview

The Non-Life Premium Volume amount is the premium-side volume component defined by Article 116 for a selected Annex II segment.[1] It sits before the reserve volume and geographical diversification factor in the Article 116 exposure build.

Input Terms

  • Annex II Segment: The non-life segment whose premium volume is being measured.[1]
  • Net Premium Bases: Premium amounts after the relevant reinsurance premium deduction has already been reflected.[1]
  • Use Alternative Volume Method: The allowed Article 116 premium-basis election for the segment.[1]

Technical Rationale

Article 116 separates premium exposure from reserve exposure because expected premium emergence and existing claim provisions have different evidence bases. The premium volume component compares next-period and prior-period premium bases, then reflects the future premium bases required by the standard formula. Reinsurance eligibility evidence belongs to the net-premium basis rather than to the premium-volume arithmetic itself.

Important Notes

  • Reporting: The premium-volume result supports the premium and reserve volume fields in the S.26.05.01 non-life underwriting risk reporting view; it is not a standalone SCR component.[2]
